This book was written almost a century ago, and so provides an eye witness account of the birth of rodeo as we know it today. The author chronicles the metamorphosis from wild, "spur" of the moment events just getting the saddles on the horses in the cow camps to the first few years of the newly organized Pendleton Round Up.The names of the cowboys and cowgirls who competed in the earliest Round Ups are a who's who list of the Early Royalty of the sport of Rodeo. The women of the early rodeos competed just as hard and in the same events as the men. Why in 1914, Bertha Blancett was only a few points away from winning the All-Around Championship and organizers decided it would be in the best interest of all to separate men's and women's events.
For a look into the West the way it was, from a first hand point of view, makes this book a great read for all interested in the history of the west and of rodeo.

Great book. I enjoyed the history of the rodeo in the Oregon. Mr. Furlong the author lived it and covered every part of the experience.
